How I relish the magic of the artistic process! Perhaps you’ve explored art and discovered you go off into what seems to be other realms. The right brain hemisphere “takes over” and brings us to those places where there is no thought, but only responses to feelings…insight, and revelations. It’s that “aha” moment when just the perfect inspiration appears, so our creation gains value, even magic. Like the next inspired word for a poem, a new splash of paint on the canvas. Aside from writing and photography, I use (and teach) a technique called SoulCollage® to make my inner artist happy.
This month I spent four days on retreat at the Genesis Retreat Center in Westfield, MA to immerse in SoulCollage®. Together with 25 other women, we went at it obsessively, even staying inside to be with our creations while the warm sunny days beckoned us outdoors.
An intuitive process that goes deep to the soul, SoulCollage® is a way to work with images from magazines, calendars and books to create personal expressions that evoke inspiration and meaning. In this recent time with card-making, a few themes occurred and I’d like to share them with you.
Sometimes life seems so cluttered with responsibilities and distractions that it seems there is little time to just “be.” Creating simple cards that give rise to that sense of spaciousness is one way to be inspired to create more time and space. This earth-tone card also for me evokes a sense of connection to the earth and all her ways of beauty.
Within my huge deck of SoulCollage® cards I have many that depict being in a place above the earth. For me it’s not a disregard for the beauty of our planet and the gift of being here, but a soulful reminder we are not just beings of this third dimension. This card to me means “Lightness of Being.”
“Taking flight” to other realms, particulary the cosmos, is a theme I like to work with a lot, as it produces a sense of expansion and the multidimensional nature of our humanness.
This is a “romance” card–I’m happy I had these romantic images that also portray sacred partnership.
Self- love is an art. When I saw the woman in red wrapping her arms around herself it reminded me of those times when I do that too. My guess is we all do that at certain points in our lives. Even when we are not alone, it’s our own heart that is able to give out love or take it in from another person.
The woman in the wedding dress at first felt to me as if she was sad, walking away…giving up…the window – closed. The clock felt like time is going by, the bird in flight, leaving. But as I looked deeper when this card was completed, it became totally different. A divine union perhaps… time for creating a path of service…sacred solitude, the bird a symbol of freeing the soul. This is one of the wonderful aspects of SoulCollage®…the cards can change their meaning, perhaps depending on what’s going on….inside and out.
SoulCollagers like to work with windows, doors and other metaphors like pathways, stairways. This was a window in a garden I cut out, then found a combination of a pathway leading to a divine being…and hands guiding toward the opening. It reminds me of my own yearning for divine connection.
The “Initiation” card is my favorite of my new cards. Entering a gateway, humbled and in shadow in front of the divine being about to initiate her…and her readiness evident with diamond consciousness.
Of course there are many meanings in each card. These are like new friends, and we are getting to know each other.
Perhaps this blog inspires you to create your own cards. What images would you be drawn to? With a simple glue stick and some blank 5×8 mat board, how would your soul put them together for you? What may you learn about your inner self?
Come find out! I run a SoulCollage® class the first Sunday of every month, from 1-4 pm. The fee is $30 and all materials are supplied. Because we work on six-foot tables, space is limited so please let me know if you plan to come… Judy@AHigherBalance.com. SoulCollage® was developed by Seena Frost (www.SoulCollage.com ).
SoulCollage® cards are made from images found in materials like magazines, catalogs and calendars. These collaged cards are used only for the cardmaker’s own inner exploration.
SoulCollage® cards are not sold, traded, bartered, or copied (except as a back-up for the card-maker’s own use). SoulCollage® is grateful to the artists and photographers who make this deep awakening process possible and in all ways SoulCollage® seeks to be respectful of their rights.
